New Media Marketing Conference
Next week I’ll be presenting at the 2nd Annual New Media Marketing conference at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg. This four-day conference features an impressive lineup of speakers and I have to say it’s an honour to be presenting at such a great event.
I’m going to be talking about incorporating SEO and Social Media into a company’s marketing spend and it’s a perfect topic for me as I feel very passionate about both areas. These days I find myself working with Social Media more and more but my initial passion was always search.
I’ve long felt that while Google is an awesome company and I highly respect their ethos, one company should not control so much of the world’s data. Personally I’d rather have Google own my data than say Microsoft but I still maintain vertical search is a necessity in this ever dominant market.
When I developed Grabble in 2006 I thought I was onto a winner. Sadly it never took off (it’s almost dead in fact) but what I did gain out of this project was an appreciation for search and the technologies that power it. Grabble evolved from open source Java applications, Perl and then I settled on PHP.
There’s a reason why Google have a couple hundred thousand servers collecting, storing and processing information but none of this I could understand, contemplate or appreciate until I tried doing it myself.
What’s even better than talking about some passionate topics is the fact that I’m the second presenter which takes a lot of the pressure off me to really enjoy the remainder of the conference.
If anyone is still interested in going to the conference I have a whole bunch of vouchers which give you 25% discount off the conference price. Get in touch with me and I’ll happily hand them out.

Presentation courtesy of Nic and Zoopy
Many thanks firstly to Nic who was clever enough to film my presentation at the 27dinner and secondly to Jason at Zoopy who went out of his way to get this video up on their server. I was having loads of difficulty uploading the video but Jason quickly jumped in to help out. The irony in all of this is that YouTube, the largest video sharing site on the web, rejected this very video on the grounds that it was too long - go figure!

27dinner and Team Afrigator
Lots has been written about the eventful 27dinner last night but I just wanted to say that it was an awesome experience all round. I did a presentation in which I announced the launch of the private beta version of Afrigator and more details, along with the presentation, can be found on the official blog.
Nic also recorded the entire presentation and I’m trying desperately to get it uploaded so hopefully more details will follow soon.
The highlight for me was having all four Afrigators in the same room at the same time. It took eight months but finally Team Afrigator was a unit - if only for a few short hours.

RedCube presentation on Multimedia and Social Media
Gregor and I have just finished delivering a presentation to RedCube, the PR agency behind Visa, on Multimedia and Social Media. Gregor took the first part of the presentation where he highlights what The Times is doing on a Multimedia level and also analyzes current global and local trends within in the Multimedia industry.
I took an in depth look at Social Media, Web 2.0 and the impact this has on PR agencies globally. There is an interesting case study I did on the Frito-Lay PR department and how they utilised the Social Media sphere to promote the Doritos chips brand among their core target market of 16-24 year olds. I also tried to look at what South African PR companies can do to further promote their clients’ brands in the Social Media sphere.
The presentation, without the sexy Keynote effects and video we included, is embedded below.
